The working principle of a zirconia oxygen analyzer is based on the oxygen ionic conduction through a zirconia-based solid electrolyte. Here's a step-by-step explanation of the working principle:


1. Dual-chamber structure: A zirconia oxygen analyzer typically consists of a sensing element with a dual-chamber structure. The sensing element separates the gas sample into two compartments: a reference chamber and a measurement chamber. These chambers are separated by a zirconia electrolyte tube.


2. Zirconia electrolyte: The zirconia electrolyte tube is made of zirconia (zirconium dioxide, ZrO2), a ceramic material that exhibits high oxygen ion conductivity at elevated temperatures. The zirconia electrolyte is a solid-state ionic conductor and acts as the sensing element of the analyzer.


3. Temperature control: The zirconia oxygen analyzer requires a high operating temperature to ensure the conductivity of the zirconia electrolyte. The analyzer includes a built-in heater or an external temperature control system to maintain the required temperature, typically in the range of 600 to 900 degrees Celsius (1112 to 1652 degrees Fahrenheit).


4. Oxygen concentration measurement: When the zirconia oxygen analyzer is in operation, the reference chamber is exposed to a reference gas with a known oxygen concentration, while the measurement chamber is exposed to the gas sample whose oxygen concentration needs to be measured.


5. Oxygen ionic conduction: When a voltage is applied across the zirconia electrolyte, oxygen ions from the measurement chamber migrate through the zirconia electrolyte toward the reference chamber. This migration of oxygen ions occurs due to the oxygen concentration gradient between the two chambers.


6. Nernst voltage measurement: As the oxygen ions move through the zirconia electrolyte, a change in the electrical potential, known as the Nernst voltage, is generated across the sensing element. The Nernst voltage is directly proportional to the logarithm of the oxygen partial pressure difference between the reference and measurement chambers. This voltage is related to the oxygen concentration in the gas sample.


7. Electrical output: The zirconia oxygen analyzer measures the Nernst voltage across the sensing element and converts it into an electrical output signal, which can be in the form of voltage, current, or a digital signal. The output signal is proportional to the oxygen concentration in the gas sample.


8. Calibration: To ensure accurate measurements, zirconia oxygen analyzers require calibration using known reference gases with known oxygen concentrations. Calibration establishes a linear relationship between the measured output signal and the oxygen concentration, enabling accurate oxygen concentration measurements.


By measuring the Nernst voltage and correlating it to the oxygen concentration, zirconia oxygen analyzers provide real-time and accurate measurements of oxygen levels in various industrial processes, combustion systems, and environmental monitoring applications.
