1. Sensing Principle: Zirconia oxygen analyzers operate based on the principle of the oxygen partial pressure difference between two sides of a zirconia solid electrolyte. At high temperatures, the zirconia material becomes ionically conductive, allowing oxygen ions to migrate through it.


2. Construction: The zirconia oxygen analyzer consists of a zirconia-based sensing element, typically a tube or a flat disc, that acts as the oxygen-sensitive part of the instrument. The sensing element is heated to a high temperature, usually around 600 to 900 degrees Celsius, to enable oxygen ion conductivity.


3. Reference Gas: The zirconia oxygen analyzer requires a reference gas, usually ambient air or a known oxygen concentration gas, to create a reference oxygen partial pressure on one side of the zirconia sensing element. This reference gas establishes a baseline against which the oxygen concentration in the sample gas is compared.


4. Sample Gas Analysis: The sample gas, which is the gas whose oxygen concentration is being measured, is introduced to the other side of the zirconia sensing element. Oxygen ions from the reference side of the sensor migrate through the zirconia to the sample side, driven by the oxygen partial pressure difference between the two sides.


5. Electrochemical Cell: The zirconia sensing element acts as an electrochemical cell. When oxygen ions migrate through the zirconia, an electrical potential is generated across the sensing element. This potential is proportional to the oxygen concentration difference between the sample gas and the reference gas.


6. Signal Detection and Analysis: The electrical potential generated by the zirconia sensing element is detected and measured by the analyzer's electronics. The signal is processed and converted into an oxygen concentration reading, typically displayed in percentage or parts per million (ppm) of oxygen.


7. Calibration and Maintenance: Zirconia oxygen analyzers require periodic calibration to ensure accurate measurements. Calibration is typically performed using a known oxygen concentration gas or a calibration gas mixture. Regular maintenance, such as sensor cleaning and replacement, is necessary to maintain the performance and longevity of the analyzer.


8. Applications: Zirconia oxygen analyzers find applications in various industries, including combustion processes, power plants, incinerators, kilns, furnaces, and exhaust gas analysis. They are used for monitoring and controlling oxygen levels to optimize combustion efficiency, assess air/fuel ratios, and ensure compliance with environmental regulations.
