Overview
A disposable extracorporeal circulation tube is a medical device used in cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) procedures to circulate blood outside the body during cardiac surgery. It is a plastic tube that is connected to the patient's blood vessels and a CPB machine.
The tube is disposable, meaning that it is used only once for a single surgical procedure and then discarded. This reduces the risk of infection and cross-contamination between patients.
During CPB, the tube is inserted into a vein or artery in the patient's body and connected to the CPB machine. Blood is then diverted from the heart and circulated through the tube and the machine, where it is oxygenated, filtered, and pumped back into the patient's body.
Disposable extracorporeal circulation tubes are available in various sizes to accommodate different patient needs. They are typically made of biocompatible materials, such as PVC (polyvinyl chloride) or polyurethane, which are safe for use in the human body.
After the CPB procedure is complete, the disposable tube is carefully removed and discarded, and the patient's blood flow is restored to its normal state.
