Computed tomography (CT) involves using an x-ray tube that moves around the body and continuously projects a thin fan of x-rays through it. During this process, detectors on the opposite side of the tube continuously monitor the number of x-rays passing through the body and the angle at which the beam is being sent. The number of x-rays reaching the detector changes depending on the type of tissue it passes through given the movement of the tube.
A computer then looks at the data obtained and works out the most probable density of any point within the body scanned. This density is expressed in terms of Hounsfield units, which range from -1000 to 3000. Air has a value of -1000, while water is at 0, and lead or any other heavy metal is at 3000. Because these values represent the degree of the x-ray beam being attenuated, what is being portrayed is an attenuation map. This is displayed on the monitor and stored as a file in the computer.
For a complete scan, the animal needs to be moved a set number of millimeters. This type of scanning allows the entire area to be imaged, without impinging on any structure. CT also provides more detail when it comes to contrast compared to a standard radiograph. This makes it possible to easily differentiate between individual parts of the brain or muscle bellies.
It is now possible to get 8 to 64-slice scanners, and the actual scanning time is relatively short. Animals usually need to be anesthetized for the scan to be successful. Although there are studies which have documented CT scans with animals that are wide awake or lightly sedated, this lowers the accuracy of the scanning and is normally only used when the animal's condition is concerning, or in rare situations when sedation would further affect the body tissues.
CT scans are regularly used to detect changes deep within the body, which include tumors, abscesses, hematomas, as well as other certain abnormalities. Scanning is also used to evaluate certain dynamic processes, such as blood flow, in the body.
