Choosing between moisture resistant gypsum board and standard gypsum board is a cost-versus-risk decision, not a matter of preference. The measurable difference is in the core: one absorbs water, the other resists it.

Dry interior partitions, ceilings in air-conditioned spaces and internal office walls gain nothing from a moisture resistant core. Specifying it everywhere inflates the material budget and, worse, can create a false sense that the wall is water-resistant — which leads to membranes being omitted where they are actually needed.
A 10–20% board premium is negligible against the cost of rebuilding a bathroom wall. But paying that premium in a dry corridor is pure waste. Match the panel to the moisture exposure first, then match the whole assembly to the panel.
The conclusions above come from claim files and replacement projects rather than from catalogue claims: standard board that swelled within a single season in a laundry, and moisture resistant board still sound after fifteen years in a natatorium where the vapour barrier was correctly detailed. In both cases, performance tracked the assembly.
Panels are measured on water absorption (ASTM C473), flexural strength in wet and dry states, nail pull and dimensional stability, and assessed against ASTM C1396, EN 520 and AS/NZS 2588. Quotes always state the standard, the grade and the test basis, so you can compare suppliers on data rather than on colour. Where an application does not need a moisture resistant core, we say so in writing — over-specification is not good service.
