The swing shaft is typically a large, robust shaft that runs horizontally through the center of the excavator's upper structure. It is supported by bearings at both ends to ensure smooth and reliable rotation. One end of the swing shaft connects to the swing motor, which generates the hydraulic power needed for rotation. The other end is connected to the swing drive mechanism, which includes gears and other components that convert the hydraulic power into mechanical rotation.
Within the swing shaft assembly, there is often a pinion gear, sometimes referred to as the swing pinion gear or swing pinion shaft. This gear meshes with a larger ring gear attached to the upper structure, allowing the swing motion to be transmitted.
