The Hairpin Heat Exchanger is a compact heat-transfer solution designed for applications requiring true counter-current flow, high temperature differences, high pressure or limited installation space.
Also known as a Hairpin Heat Exchanger, Double Pipe Heat Exchanger or Multitube Hairpin Exchanger, it uses a U-shaped configuration to provide efficient heat transfer while accommodating thermal expansion.
Compared with conventional shell and tube configurations, the true counter-current arrangement can be particularly advantageous when the process requires a close temperature approach or temperature cross.
Hot and cold fluids flow in opposite directions, maximizing the effective temperature driving force. This configuration is especially useful for applications with:
The U-shaped hairpin arrangement provides a compact equipment footprint and can be assembled in series or parallel according to the required heat-transfer duty.
The tubular configuration is well suited to demanding pressure applications. Depending on size, material and design conditions, hairpin exchangers can be engineered for very high pressure service.
The U-tube configuration naturally accommodates differential thermal expansion between the tube and shell, making hairpin exchangers attractive for applications with large temperature differences.

Different process duties call for different configurations.
A single inner tube is positioned inside the outer shell. It is suitable for relatively smaller heat-transfer duties and straightforward high-pressure services.
Multiple tubes are installed inside the hairpin shell to increase heat-transfer area. This configuration is suitable when the process requires higher thermal capacity while maintaining the hairpin's compact arrangement.
Hairpin exchangers are available in configurations including single tube, multitube, bare tube, finned tube, U-tube and removable bundle designs.
