Pendimethalin operates through a unique mitosis-inhibiting mechanism that targets microtubule assembly in germinating weed seedlings. Unlike herbicides that inhibit amino acid synthesis or photosynthesis, pendimethalin specifically disrupts cell division by preventing the formation of mitotic spindles during metaphase.
This action occurs at the cellular level where pendimethalin binds to tubulin proteins, blocking microtubule polymerization. The result is arrested cell division, leading to characteristic swelling and club-shaped root tips in susceptible weeds. Seedlings cannot establish proper root systems or emerge from soil, causing growth cessation and eventual death.

Target Weeds:
Timing: Apply pre-plant or immediately post-planting, before weed emergence to establish effective soil concentration.
Soil Incorporation: Due to high volatility and photodegradation sensitivity, prompt soil incorporation is essential to minimize active ingredient loss through evaporation or sunlight breakdown.
Residual Activity: Provides long-lasting weed suppression for 6–8 weeks after application, offering extended protection during critical early growth stages.
Resistance Management: Recommended for use in rotation with herbicides from other HRAC groups (Group 14 PPO inhibitors or Group 2 ALS inhibitors) to prevent resistance development.
