This API 600 carbon steel OS&Y flanged gate valve is a workhorse for industrial pipeline isolation applications. The ASTM A216 WCB cast carbon steel body with 8-inch nominal bore and Class 600LB pressure rating delivers reliable on-off service in oil transportation, refinery process lines, gas distribution, water treatment, and general industrial piping. The outside screw and yoke (OS&Y) design clearly displays valve position through stem height while protecting stem threads from process fluid exposure. A bevel gear operator provides the mechanical advantage needed for smooth operation of larger bore sizes. Every valve undergoes hydrostatic shell testing at 1500 PSI and seat testing per API 598.

Q: What is the difference between OS&Y and NRS (non-rising stem) gate valves?
A: In an OS&Y valve, the stem rises above the handwheel when opening, providing clear visual position indication and isolating stem threads from the process fluid. NRS valves have the stem threaded into the gate, rotating but not rising—they are more compact but the stem threads are exposed to process fluids, making them less suitable for corrosive or high-temperature services. OS&Y is preferred for industrial and refinery applications due to its reliability and maintenance advantages.

Q: Why is a gear operator needed for an 8-inch valve?
A: At Class 600LB, an 8-inch gate valve requires approximately 80-120 Nm of torque to operate under full differential pressure. A bevel gearbox reduces the handwheel rim force to less than 360N (36 kg), which is the maximum recommended per ISO 5210 for manual operation. Without a gearbox, operating the valve against line pressure would be physically impossible for most operators.

Q: Can this valve be used for throttling or flow control?
A: Gate valves are designed for fully open or fully closed service and should not be used for throttling.
