The chromium element in stainless steel forms a "passivation film" (a dense Cr₂O₃ oxide film) on the surface, preventing oxygen, moisture, and acids and alkalis from coming into contact with the metal, thus preventing rust (carbon steel screws are prone to red rust due to oxidation). This makes stainless steel screws particularly suitable for humid, acidic, and alkaline environments (such as kitchens, bathrooms, outdoor areas, and chemical environments).
