The Problem: Boring 23mm holes in industrial materials like alloy steel or galvanized plates generates significant localized friction. Standard uncoated HSS bits often experience "edge rounding" within a few cycles because the friction heat exceeds the red-hardness threshold of the steel.

Surface Drag: Bare high-speed steel has a relatively high friction coefficient. During rotation, micro-abrasions on the tooth face trap heat, leading to "chip-welding" (galling), where the metal being cut bonds to the tool.
Structural Stress: Without a protective barrier, the cutting edge is directly exposed to the abrasive nature of metal scales and surface coatings, causing the sharp tip to degrade prematurely.

Q: Why is M2 steel superior to 4341 for this 23mm saw?

Q: Does the gold coating wear off?
A: The TiN coating is a molecular bond, not a paint. While it will eventually wear at the very tip of the cutting edge after hundreds of holes, the coating on the tooth faces continues to reduce friction and heat throughout the life of the tool.
