Q: Why use Hex-shaped dies instead of Round dies for NPT?
A: Hex-shaped dies are preferred for NPT repair because they can be used with standard wrenches or sockets in tight spaces where a traditional die stock may not fit—perfect for on-site pipe maintenance.
Q: Can I use NPT tools on BSPT (British) fittings?
A: No. NPT has a 60° thread angle, whereas BSPT has a 55° angle. They are not compatible; mixing them will cause cross-threading and permanent leaks.
Q: What is the correct tapping depth for NPT?
A: Depth is critical because the thread is tapered. You should tap until the "Hand Tight Engagement" point is reached—typically when 4 to 5 threads of the tap remain visible above the surface. Tapping all the way to the shank will make the hole too large to seal.
Q: Is lubrication necessary for these Alloy Steel tools?
A: Yes. Since the contact area increases rapidly as the taper advances, friction builds up quickly. Always use a high-quality cutting oil or tapping paste to protect the tool and ensure a smooth thread finish.
