Q: Why does the tapping force increase as I go deeper?
A: This is a result of the tapered geometry. As you advance, the tap diameter increases, engaging a larger surface area of the workpiece. This "interference" is exactly what creates the seal. Always use high-quality tapping lubricant.
Q: Can I use NPT taps on BSPT (British) fittings?
A: No. While both are tapered, NPT has a 60° thread angle and BSPT has a 55° angle. Mixing them will result in cross-threading and catastrophic leaks.
Q: What is the correct "Tapping Depth" for NPT?
A: Depth is critical. You should tap until the "Hand Tight Engagement" point is reached—typically when about 4–5 threads of the tap remain visible above the surface. Tapping all the way to the shank will make the hole too large to seal.
