Classification of Wheel Assembly Corner Boxes
Generally, the corner boxes of wheel assemblies are classified into right-angle boxes, flat-base boxes, round-corner boxes, bolted types, etc.
Round Bearing Housing Wheel Assembly
With the advancement of China's industrial technology, the requirements for cranes have become increasingly stringent, and the angular bearing housing wheel assembly can no longer fully satisfy user demands. To enable rapid wheel assembly replacement, the round bearing housing wheel assembly was developed.
For cranes equipped with round bearing housing wheel assemblies, the wheel mounting positions on the bridge end carriage or trolley end carriage are designed as bored holes, with both sides of the web plates also machined. The wheel assembly mates with the machined surfaces on both sides of the end carriage web plates and the wheel mounting holes on the web plates. Holes are drilled on the bearing housing and threaded holes are tapped on the end carriage. When replacing the wheel assembly, since all dimensions are already positioned by the machined surfaces, the installation personnel only need to move the wheel assembly into place and tighten the bolts.
Disadvantages of Round Corner Boxes
First, because this type of wheel assembly relies entirely on machined surfaces for positioning, there is limited room for major adjustments to the wheel alignment. Adjustment can only be made by adding shims between the bearing housing and the end carriage, and the adjustment range is quite limited. Therefore, once crane rail gnawing occurs due to wheel alignment deviation, it is very difficult to rectify.
Second, when the trolley of a general-purpose overhead bridge crane experiences the "three-leg" phenomenon (where four wheels are not in the same plane), it is also very challenging to adjust.
Application of Right-Angle Boxes and Flat-Base Boxes
In practice, controlling the horizontal skew value of the traveling mechanism wheels primarily involves adopting corresponding technical measures based on different product structures. A relatively common design structure with simpler processing techniques is to assemble the wheels onto brackets to form wheel assemblies—for example, angular bearing housing wheel assemblies and bogie-type 45° split bearing housing wheel assemblies. After installation on the crane main structure, the wheel horizontal skew is adjusted to an appropriate level and then secured.
Classification and Characteristics of Wheel Assembly Processing Techniques
The commonly used processing techniques for our company's wheel assemblies are casting and forging.
Castings have greater strength and are used for parts subjected to compressive or tensile forces, such as rudder horns, bulbous bows, and anchor lips on ships, which are all cast steel components.
Forgings (sometimes also called stampings) have greater toughness and are used for parts subjected to torque, such as automotive steering arms.
Forging: A forging is a metal object shaped by applying compressive force through plastic deformation. This force is typically applied using a hammer or press. The forging process creates a refined grain structure and improves the physical properties of the metal.
Casting: A casting is a metal object obtained by various casting methods—that is, by pouring, injecting, suctioning, or other casting techniques, molten liquid metal into a pre-prepared mold, allowing it to cool, and then processing it to obtain an object with a specific shape, size, and performance.
Application Scope
Double-flange wheel assemblies are mainly used in gantry cranes, double-girder overhead bridge crane bridge traveling mechanisms, ladle crane traveling mechanisms, electric flat cars, bogie assemblies, ship unloaders, shipyards, port machinery, coal unloaders, stacker-reclaimers, container cranes, etc.
Single-flange wheel assemblies are mainly used in gantry cranes below 5t, trolley traveling mechanisms of double-girder overhead bridge cranes, etc.
