Piston pumps are the "aristocrats" of excavator hydraulic systems and the most common choice for medium and large excavators. They use multiple pistons moving reciprocally within cylinders to alter working volume, achieving oil intake and discharge. Based on piston arrangement, they're mainly egorized as axial or radial piston pumps.
Axial piston pumps dominate modern excavators, with pistons arranged parallel to the drive shaft. When the swashplate (or tilt plate) angles relative to the drive shaft, the pistons reciproe during rotation. Greater angles create longer piston strokes and larger pump displacement. Modern variable displacement piston pumps can adjust the swashplate angle in real time to modify output flow for different working conditions.
