Working Principle

The travel gearbox operates as a speed reducer and torque amplifier:

  1. Power Input: Receives high-speed, low-torque rotational energy from the hydraulic motor (or engine via a driveshaft in mechanical systems).

  2. Gear Reduction: Multi-stage gears (planetary/spur) reduce speed while increasing torque.

  3. Output to Sprocket: The final drive transfers torque to the sprocket, which engages with the track links, propelling the excavator.

  4. Direction Control: Integrated clutches or hydraulic valves enable forward/reverse movement.

Hydraulic excavators commonly use hydraulic travel motors coupled with gearboxes, while older models may employ mechanical transmissions.
