Brief introduction
Stationary fuel cells are used for commercial, industrial and residential primary and backup power generation. Fuel cells are very useful as power sources in remote locations, such as spacecraft, remote weather stations, large parks, communications centers, rural locations including research stations, and in certain military applications. A fuel cell system running on hydrogen can be compact and lightweight, and have no major moving parts. Because fuel cells have no moving parts and do not involve combustion, in ideal conditions they can achieve up to 99.9999% reliability. This equates to less than one minute of downtime in a six-year period.

The cell
A fuel ‘cell’ essentially consists of the anode and cathode separated by an ‘ion-conducting’ electrolyte which can come in many different forms.
A fuel is passed across the anode where it is split by a catalytic reaction into hydrogen ions (H+) and electrons.
Simultaneously an oxygen source (usually either air or pure oxygen) is passed across the cathode side of the cell.
As the fuel cell’s electrolyte layer is designed to allow a flow of hydrogen ions through it from anode to cathode, these flow across the membrane forcing the electrons to flow through an external electrical circuit to the cathode side where they then combine with the hydrogen ions and oxygen to form water.
This flow of electrons creates the electrical current or power from the fuel cell.
