The WEG SSW7000 is a high-performance soft starter in cabinet form for three-phase induction and synchronous medium voltage motors, covering motor voltages from 2.3 kV to 13.8 kV and output currents from 70 to 600 A — up to 16,300 HP (12,200 kW) at 13.8 kV. It lowers the voltage applied to the motor during starting through firing-angle control of antiparallel thyristors, reducing motor current and torque in step for a smooth start. This prevents mechanical shock to the load, protects the motor against burnout and current surges on the supply, and positions the product as a prepackaged, engineered solution for heavy duty applications including marine and mining.
The core design advantage of the SSW7000 is system-level integration rather than component assembly. It has an integrated bypass and its own line contactor or circuit breaker, so no upstream circuit breaker is required. Motor protection is built into the standard cabinet, eliminating the need for extra protection relays, and ground fault protection is standard. Firing between the power circuit and the control circuit uses fibre optics, giving complete isolation between the MV and LV compartments. MTBF is 310,000 hours, heatsinks are sized for a genuine heavy duty overload cycle, the unit runs heavy duty at 50 °C ambient (above 40 °C with current derating), and it requires no rear access — making it well suited to retrofit projects replacing an existing starting method in place.

Frequently Asked Questions
How does the SSW7000 differ from a medium voltage VFD, and which should I choose?
The SSW7000 is a soft starter: it regulates motor voltage only during starting and stopping, then runs direct-on-line through the integrated bypass, so it does not change running speed. If your process only needs smooth start/stop without speed control in operation, a soft starter is typically considerably more cost-effective than a medium voltage VFD of the same rating. If you need running speed control or energy savings, choose a VFD.
Do I need an upstream circuit breaker?
No. The SSW7000 includes its own line contactor or vacuum circuit breaker (available as vacuum contactor or vacuum circuit breaker configurations) and is able to perform a direct-on-line start. Motor protection is built into the standard cabinet, so no upstream circuit breaker is required, and no additional protection relays are needed either.
Does it support synchronous motors?
Yes. The SSW7000 is explicitly suitable for three-phase induction motors and synchronous motors, providing start/stop control and protection for both. For special requirements involving brush or brushless synchronous motors, WEG can provide an engineered solution — state this at the selection stage.
Which of the five starting modes should I use?
Voltage ramp — low starting torque, quadratic torque loads such as fans
Current limit — where starting current must be tightly constrained; the ramp ends and the bypass closes once current falls below the set value
Current ramp — variable torque loads, or weak supply systems
Torque control (FTC) — where starting torque must follow the load curve precisely; choose constant, linear or quadratic torque, with a linear speed ramp throughout starting
Pump control — dedicated to water pumps, suppressing water hammer and pipeline pressure overshoot
What are the protection degree and installation requirements?
Frames C and B are rated IP41 or IP54 / NEMA 12; frame D is rated IP41. Ambient temperature is −10 … +40 °C, with 2 % / °C derating above 40 °C; maximum installation altitude is 1,000 m (contact the factory for higher altitudes); relative humidity 5 %-90 % non-condensing. The unit requires no rear access, making it suitable for retrofit installation in place. An IP56 option is available for outdoor use.
What should I know about shipping and delivery?
The SSW7000 is a cabinet-form unit weighing between 670 kg (frame C) and 2,800 kg (frame D), and it is bulky. This has three practical consequences: (1) freight is a large share of total cost, so quotations must include an explicit transport and rigging plan; (2) lead times are typically longer than for low voltage products, so allow time for manufacture and ocean freight; (3) professional rigging and commissioning are required on arrival.
