What is an optical bypass switch?


The Optical Bypass Switch is capable of automatically bypassing faulty network nodes in the event of a power outage. It is used in optical fiber communications and fits ring or linear fiber network architectures.

It has two working mode:


  • When the power is on, the optical bypass switch operates in the normal mode and forwards ethernet packets between the three switches
  • When the power failure occurs, the optical bypass switch operates in the bypass mode the directly forwards ethernet packet between the two fiber switches and bypass the middle fiber switch.

A: It is mainly used to prevent network outages, protect the network or control the networking system in the optical telecommunication.

It can be used in ring or linear fiber network architectures such as railway communication systems, factory automation, and power substations.

For standalone unit, it could be connected with optical ports of different speed and brands.
