Refractory bricks are blocks of refractory ceramic materials used for lining furnaces, kilns, stoves and fireplaces. Refractory bricks are mainly designed to withstand high heat, but usually should also have low thermal conductivity to save energy. Generally, dense bricks are used in applications with extremely high mechanical, chemical or thermal stresses, such as the interior of wood burning kilns or furnaces. These materials are susceptible to wood abrasion, ash or slag slag and high temperatures. Dense refractory bricks have a high thermal mass, which is sometimes a useful attribute because after the fire is extinguished, they will retain heat in, for example, a pizza oven. Kiln bricks are made by firing a clay-based composition in a kiln until it is partially vitrified. For special purposes, it can also be glazed. Refractory bricks usually contain 30% to 40% alumina, and the main raw material is usually clay with other materials. The maximum use temperature increases with the increase of alumina content, and kiln bricks with alumina content above 80% can be obtained.

Low-density refractory bricks

In other less demanding situations (such as natural gas kilns), perforated bricks are a better choice, usually called insulating bricks. They are weaker, but much lighter than lightweight bricks, easier to form, and have better thermal insulation. In this case, their thermal mass is low and therefore cannot be used to store heat. Insulation bricks have better thermal shock resistance than dense refractory bricks, but the main disadvantage is low strength. The thermal insulation properties of these bricks usually come from perlite or verstone. Like dense refractory bricks, there are a series of grades corresponding to different maximum service temperatures. The most common is 23 – 1260 oC.
