1. What is a Brake Drum?
A brake drum is a crucial component of a drum brake system, which is widely used in commercial trucks, trailers, and the rear wheels of many vehicles as the primary parking brake or emergency brake.
It is a cylindrical, cast-iron component shaped like a short, hollow pot that is securely bolted to the inside of the truck's wheel and rotates with it.
2. How Does It Work?
The brake drum works in conjunction with a set of internal components mounted on a stationary backing plate:
Brake Shoes: Curved metal pads lined with friction material.
Wheel Cylinder: Hydraulically pushes the brake shoes outward.
Return Springs: Pull the shoes back when braking is released.
Self-Adjuster: Maintains the optimal distance between the shoes and the drum.
