The Starter Pinion Clutch (Bendix Drive) with OEM numbers 8971797710 / 8-97179771-0 is a verified direct-fit replacement for ISUZU 700P series trucks equipped with the 4HK1 engine. This pinion clutch is a critical component of the starter motor assembly, responsible for transmitting rotational torque from the starter motor to the flywheel ring gear during engine starting, and automatically disengaging once the engine starts to prevent overspeed damage to the starter.
When the ignition switch is turned, the starter solenoid energizes, pushing the pinion clutch along the armature shaft to engage the drive gear with the engine flywheel ring gear. Simultaneously, the starter motor rotates, transferring torque through the roller-type one-way clutch inside the pinion to the drive gear, turning the flywheel to start the engine. Once the engine starts, the flywheel speed exceeds the starter speed. The rollers inside the one-way clutch move into the wide end of the wedge-shaped slots under centrifugal force, achieving an overrunning function that automatically disengages the starter from the flywheel, protecting the starter from high-speed back-driving damage.
