This cylinder head is a critical engine component that forms the combustion chamber, houses the valvetrain, and manages intake and exhaust gas flow.
Working Principle
The cylinder head sits atop the engine block and forms the upper half of the combustion chamber. It houses the camshaft (SOHC), valve springs, intake and exhaust valves, and precombustion chambers. The camshaft actuates the valves to control air intake and exhaust gas expulsion at precisely timed intervals. The cylinder head must withstand combustion pressures exceeding 160 bar while managing thermal expansion and maintaining a gas-tight seal with the cylinder block via the head gasket.
The 4D56 is a 2,477 cc inline-four SOHC diesel engine producing approximately 85 PS (63 kW) at 4,200 rpm and 196.1 N·m of torque at 2,000 rpm, widely used in Mitsubishi L200, Pajero, and Delica from 1983 to 2011. A notorious failure mode for the 4D56 engine is thermal fatigue cracking between the valve seats and glow plug holes, frequently occurring under heavy payloads and high operating temperatures. Failure Symptoms
Replace the cylinder head assembly when any of these symptoms appear:
Coolant loss without visible external leaks — a cracked cylinder head or failed head gasket allows coolant to enter the combustion chamber or oil galleries.
White smoke from the exhaust after warm-up — coolant entering the combustion chamber produces white steam from the exhaust.
Milky or emulsified engine oil — coolant mixing with oil creates a milky emulsion on the dipstick or oil filler cap, indicating head deck warpage or cracking.
Overheating at low speeds or under load — reduced cooling efficiency from head cracks or gasket failure causes persistent overheating.
Rough idle, misfiring, or loss of power — compression loss between cylinders causes misfiring and poor engine performance.
Pressurized coolant hoses — combustion gases entering the cooling system pressurize the hoses, causing swelling or coolant expulsion.
No hot air from the heater — a common symptom of combustion gases entering the cooling system and displacing coolant.
⚠️ Critical Inspection Note: Mitsubishi service manuals require that when replacing the cylinder head, new cylinder head bolts must always be used — never reuse old head bolts. The cylinder head bolt tightening procedure requires a staged torque-and-angle method: Step 1: 29 N·m (21 ft-lb). Step 2: 59 N·m (44 ft-lb). Step 3: turn an additional 90°. Always replace the cylinder head gasket with a new unit. Valve clearance (cold): Intake 0.15 mm / Exhaust 0.25 mm.

The MD303750 is the earlier production version, while MD348983 is the updated casting with recessed valves. The AMC 908513 is the primary aftermarket reference number.
