This cylinder liner is a critical component of the engine's combustion system, responsible for forming the cylinder bore in which the piston reciprocates, providing a durable wear surface for the piston rings, and transferring combustion heat to the engine cooling system.
Working Principle
The cylinder liner (also called cylinder sleeve) is a cylindrical component installed in the engine block to form the cylinder bore. In the 4HG1 engine, the liner is of the dry type — meaning the outer wall does not contact engine coolant directly. Instead, the liner is press-fitted into the engine block bore, and cooling is achieved through the block's water jacket surrounding the liner. This design allows for a thinner liner wall, better block rigidity, and reduced risk of coolant leaks compared to wet liners. The liner must withstand combustion pressures exceeding 160 bar, provide a wear-resistant surface for the piston rings, and transfer heat efficiently to maintain proper engine operating temperatures. The 4HG1 is a 4.57L inline-four direct-injection diesel engine producing approximately 121 HP, widely used in ISUZU NPR/NQR trucks from 1994 to 2016. The liner features a phosphate coating on the outer surface to improve press-fit retention and corrosion resistance during service.
Failure Symptoms
Replace the cylinder liner when any of these symptoms appear:
Excessive oil consumption / blue exhaust smoke — worn liner-to-ring clearance allows oil into the combustion chamber.
Loss of compression and power — a worn or scored liner reduces cylinder sealing, causing power loss, hard starting, and rough idle.
Cylinder wall scoring (scuffing) — foreign objects, snapped snap rings, or overheating can scratch the liner bore, producing vertical grooves.
Piston slap or knocking noise — excessive liner-to-piston clearance causes the piston to rock in the bore, especially when cold.
Overheating — a cracked or deformed liner can reduce heat transfer efficiency, causing localized hot spots.
Metal debris in the oil pan — liner wear particles contaminate the engine oil and accelerate wear of other components.
⚠️ Critical Inspection Note: ISUZU service manuals require that cylinder liners be replaced as a complete set of four to maintain balanced compression across all cylinders. The 4HG1 cylinder liner is available in multiple service grades (1X, 2X, 3X) corresponding to the engine block bore grade. Measure the block bore diameter before ordering to select the correct liner grade. Grade mismatch will cause abnormal liner protrusion or distortion. After pressing the liner in, measure liner protrusion with a dial indicator and verify it is within specification. Phosphate-coated liners are recommended for improved press-fit retention.
