Ensure engine is cool – Allow the engine to cool completely before disassembly
Disconnect battery – Always disconnect the negative terminal before working
Drain engine oil and coolant – Drain both fluids into suitable containers
Remove the cooling fan and belts – Remove the fan, fan shroud, and drive belts to access the timing cover
Remove the crankshaft pulley – Remove the crankshaft pulley bolt and pulley
Remove the old timing cover – Unbolt the cover from the engine block; carefully pry the cover from the engine block
Clean all mating surfaces – Thoroughly clean the engine block and cover mating surfaces; remove all old seal packing and debris
Inspect the timing chain and oil pump – Check timing chain, guides, tensioner, and oil pump for wear or damage; replace if necessary
Apply seal packing – Apply the specified seal packing (FIPG) to the timing cover as instructed
Install the new timing cover – Position the cover on the engine block; align bolt holes and dowel pins
Install mounting bolts – Install all bolts and nuts; tighten to manufacturer torque specifications
Install a new front crankshaft seal – Press a new seal into the cover before installing the crankshaft pulley
