The 1HD-FTE is Toyota's top-tier HD-series heavy-duty inline-six turbo diesel engine, representing a complete upgrade from the older 1HD-T mechanical platform. This advanced engine features a thick reinforced cast iron block and cylinder head, forged heavy-duty crankshaft, twin overhead camshaft 24-valve layout, factory-matched CT15 turbocharger with air-to-air intercooler, and Denso ECD-V3 electronic distributor injection pump with independent ECU control system.
Compared with purely mechanical 1HD-T and naturally aspirated 1HZ engines, the 1HD-FTE delivers significant improvements in power output, fuel economy, and high-load stability. It is widely recognized as a premium swap power solution for overland expedition vehicles across Australia, Middle East, Africa, and Southeast Asia markets.
Replacement fit for heavy off-road vehicles and commercial passenger vehicle chassis compatible with the 1HD-FTE powerplant. Reference production year range: 1998–2007
Three completely non-interchangeable Toyota 4.2L inline-six diesel variants are available in the market:
Two dedicated mounting configurations are available for the 1HD-FTE: HDJ100 full-size SUV wide reinforced bracket version and HDJ79 pickup compact off-road bracket version. Engine mounting feet, cooling fan bracket, flywheel housing, and clutch housing cannot be directly interchanged. The Coaster bus version adopts heavy-duty long mounting feet matching passenger car transmission system and is incompatible with LC off-road chassis.
