Why you need to top balance LiFePO4 cells before building a battery pack:

Whether using Grade A, B, or C cells, or used LiFePO4 cells, initial balancing is essential to bring them to the same state of charge. Voltage alone is unreliable for determining state of charge in this chemistry due to the flat charge/discharge curve.

Proper initial balance ensures accurate capacity test results. If cells are unbalanced, it can trigger BMS protection and provide inaccurate capacity readings.

For large battery banks or cells with varying internal resistance, manual top balancing is recommended regardless of initial voltage readings.
