Underwater Lift Bags have become indispensable in underwater archaeology, where preserving the integrity of fragile artifacts is as important as retrieving them. Constructed from flexible but highly durable fabrics, these bags can be inflated to provide precise, controlled lift without putting excessive stress on ancient wood, metal, or stone.
The key advantage in archaeological work is the ability to make objects neutrally buoyant, allowing divers to maneuver them without dragging across the seabed. Overpressure valves prevent accidental rupture, and multiple bags can be used together to distribute load evenly. Since many archaeological sites are located far from large ports, the portability of lift bags makes them ideal for remote expeditions.
Case Study: A research expedition exploring a centuries-old shipwreck in the Mediterranean discovered several intact wooden beams buried under layers of sand and coral. Each beam was over 5 meters long but delicate due to centuries of seawater exposure. Using mechanical lifting equipment was not an option, as vibrations and uneven force could cause the wood to fracture.
Instead, divers carefully excavated the beams and slid wide lifting slings beneath them. Two medium-capacity Underwater Lift Bags were attached to each beam, positioned to balance weight distribution. The bags were inflated slowly until the beams floated just above the seabed, allowing divers to swim them over to a nearby support barge.
