High Flow Rate Nasal Cannula Oxygen Therapy
High-flow nasal cannula (HFNC) oxygen therapy comprises an air/oxygen blender, active humidifier, single heated circuit, and nasal cannula. It delivers adequately heated and humidified medical gas at up to 60 L/min flow rate, offering multiple physiological benefits including anatomical dead space reduction, PEEP effect, constant fraction of inspired oxygen, and optimal humidification.
While large randomized clinical trials are limited, HFNC has gained recognition as an innovative respiratory support for critically ill patients. Most available data comes from neonatal applications, though physicians successfully apply it to adult patients with diverse conditions including hypoxemic respiratory failure, COPD exacerbations, post-extubation care, and acute heart failure.
Clinical reports demonstrate HFNC's effectiveness in reducing breathing frequency, decreasing work of breathing, and minimizing the need for escalated respiratory support across various patient populations.
