What are the most common signs that the bending section assembly is damaged?
A: Because this section undergoes constant physical stress during colonoscopies, common failure signs include:
Reduced or Loose Angulation: The scope tip cannot reach its maximum 180°or 160°bends, or it feels "floppy" and cannot hold its shape.
Knobs Hard to Turn / Stiff Mechanism: Gritty or highly resistant movement when turning the control wheels on the scope handle.
"Play" or Slack in the Controls: Turning the angulation knobs slightly results in zero movement at the distal tip.
Physical Bumps or Sharp Edges: If internal rivets break or shift, they can poke outward, creating physical abnormalities beneath the outer bending rubber.
A: Structural failure is usually driven by three factors:
Accidental Impact: Dropping or banging the distal tip against hard surfaces during reprocessing or transport, which crushes the metal links.
Over-stretching of Wires: Forcing the angulation knobs when the scope is tightly looped inside a patient's anatomy.
Chemical / Thermal Aging: Frequent exposure to high-level disinfectants or automated endoscope reprocessors (AER) over time weakens the adhesive joints and degrades the mesh.
