1. Gabion Baskets: Structural Reinforcement for Vertical/Steep Features

Gabion baskets are rectangular wire mesh cages (typically 0.5–1m in height) filled with cobblestones, gravel, or quarry stone. In river projects, their primary roles include:

• Bank Stabilization & Revetment: They are stacked or layered to form retaining walls (revetments) along eroding riverbanks, especially on steep slopes or areas with high water flow velocity. The stone-filled cages resist lateral pressure from water and soil, preventing bank collapse while absorbing the impact of currents or waves.
• Abutment & Pier Protection:Around bridge abutments, piers, or other river-crossing structures, gabion baskets form protective barriers. They shield these structures from scouring (erosion of sediment around foundations) caused by turbulent water, extending the lifespan of infrastructure.
• Groynes & Spur Dikes: Gabion baskets are often used to build groynes (elongated structures extending into the river) or spur dikes. These redirect water flow away from vulnerable banks, reduce velocity in critical areas (e.g., near river bends), and promote sediment deposition to rebuild eroded shorelines.
• Flood Defense: In temporary or permanent flood control, they are stacked to form low-height flood barriers along river edges, diverting excess water and reducing overflow risks while allowing groundwater infiltration.
