Manufacturing Process
  1. Raw Material Inspection: Chemical composition verification via spectrometer.
  2. Pipe Forming:
    • Seamless: Rotary piercing of billet + cold drawing / cold rolling
    • Welded: Coil slitting + forming + TIG/Laser welding
  3. Welding (for welded pipe): Automated GTAW (TIG) with Ar + N₂ shielding to maintain duplex phase balance.
  4. Solution Annealing: Heat treatment at 1040 - 1120°C followed by water quenching to restore ferrite/austenite balance.
  5. Pickling & Passivation: Removal of oxide scale and enhancement of corrosion resistance.
  6. Non-Destructive Testing (NDT):
    • Eddy current testing (ECT)
    • Ultrasonic testing (UT)
    • Hydrostatic testing
  7. Dimensional Inspection: OD, WT, and length tolerance verification.
  8. Marking & Packaging: Stencil marking per ASTM standard + wooden crate packaging.

Q2: Is 2205 stainless steel pipe magnetic?
A: Yes. Due to its ferrite phase (≈50%), 2205 duplex pipe is magnetic, unlike fully austenitic grades like 304 or 316.
Q3: Can 2205 duplex pipe be welded?
A: Yes, but it requires proper procedures. Use 2209 duplex filler metal, control interpass temperature (≤150°C), and maintain heat input (0.5 - 2.5 kJ/mm). Post-weld heat treatment is generally not required.
Q4: What is the difference between UNS S31803 and UNS S32205?

Q5: Does 2205 pipe require solution annealing after welding?
A: For most applications, no. As long as welding is performed with proper heat input and filler metal, the pipe can be used as-welded. For severely corrosive services, full solution annealing + water quenching may be required.

A: The Pitting Resistance Equivalent Number (PREN) for 2205 is typically ≥ 35, compared to ≈25 for 316L. Higher PREN indicates better resistance to pitting corrosion.
