Energy-Saving And High Efficiency Smelting Equipment Converter
Converter is a core smelting equipment in the metallurgical field, primarily used for steel blowing, but also applicable to matte blowing of metals such as copper and nickel. Its key feature is the flexible rotation of the furnace body. The furnace body is based on steel plates, with an overall cylindrical structure and an internal refractory lining. The blowing process requires no external heat source, relying entirely on the chemical heat released by the smelting reaction itself for heating, resulting in energy efficiency, high efficiency, and outstanding smelting efficiency.
Converters can be classified according to different dimensions: by the properties of the refractory lining, they are divided into basic converters (lined with magnesia, dolomite, etc.) and acid converters (lined with silica refractories); by the location of gas introduction, they are divided into bottom-blown, top-blown, and side-blown converters; and by the type of gas used, they are divided into air converters and oxygen converters, with oxygen converters currently being the mainstream type used in steelmaking.
Converter steelmaking uses molten pig iron as its core raw material. Its smelting principle relies on the physical heat of the raw material itself, combined with the chemical heat released from the oxidation reaction of carbon, manganese, silicon, phosphorus, and other components in the pig iron with oxygen blown into the furnace. This dual heat source works together to bring the molten metal to the required composition and temperature for tapping. The furnace charge mainly consists of molten iron and slag-forming materials (lime, quartz, fluorite, etc.), with appropriate amounts of scrap steel, cold pig iron blocks, and ores added as needed to adjust the temperature.
Converter gas is generated during the converter steelmaking process. This gas is produced by the reaction of carbon in the molten iron with blown-in oxygen at high temperatures; its main component is carbon monoxide, with a small amount of carbon dioxide. Because the amount and composition of gas generated during a single furnace smelting process are dynamic and cannot be directly supplied for use, in actual production, the converter gas recovered from multiple smelting processes is purified through cooling and dust removal before being sent to a gas storage tank for mixing. After ensuring the stability of the gas composition and quantity, it is then uniformly transported to downstream users to realize the resource utilization of metallurgical by-products.
