Sculpting Flowing Architecture: MAD Architects’ Foshan Nanhai Art Center 1:300 Scale Display Model

Project Profile
Designed by MAD Architects, Foshan Nanhai Art Center sits in Foshan, Guangdong, covering a total construction area of around 59,455 ㎡. Positioned as a landmark regional cultural complex, the project integrates grand theatre, museum, sports centre and supporting commercial & leisure facilities. It will evolve into a new cultural icon for Nanhai District and the Guangfo metropolitan area.
Inspired by rolling mountain landscapes, the architecture features continuous undulating curved roofs. Our team delivered the project in 1:300 scale. Adopting minimalist white monochrome modelling, the model highlights the building’s fluid silhouette, rhythmic curves and delicate surface textures, faithfully interpreting MAD’s avant-garde architectural aesthetics.
Core Craft Challenges & Solutions
The biggest technical hurdle lay in replicating the large-scale, continuously curved roof system.
Curved Surface Precision Fabrication
We adopted CNC precision milling for preliminary roof forming, followed by repeated manual sanding, fitting and assembly. Strict control was implemented to minimise splicing seams, achieving seamless visual continuity for the mountain-like roof volumes. Every structural ridge line was manually laid to restore the original architectural surface logic.
Embedded Atmosphere Lighting Tuning
Hidden internal lighting was deployed to present layered lighting effects. Our technicians conducted repeated tests on wire hiding, lamp spacing and colour temperature calibration. Multiple rounds of disassembly and internal structural optimisation ensured uniform light transmission under complex curved shells, avoiding uneven brightness and light leakage.
Integrated Landscape & Water Scene Layout
The model restores surrounding water bodies, pedestrian circulation systems, vegetation clusters and supporting buildings. Mirror-effect water surface base strengthens the reflection of curved architecture, delivering immersive overall scene presentation for exhibitions and design reviews.
