A spiral steel storage silo is wound from a steel strip on a Lipp machine into one sealed shell, then lined with an impermeable skin so it holds fine, dusty material without leakage. It is the closed, corrosion-resistant bulk store for coal ash from power plants, and it works just as well for grain and cement.
The shell is one continuous spiral wall, so there are no bolt seams where fine ash can weep. Inside the wall sits an impermeable liner that carries the coal ash, and the Lipp-style joint lets the shell move slightly as the stored volume changes with temperature and filling. That small movement keeps the liner from tearing under expansion, so the store stays tight for years rather than cracking at a seam.
Coal ash is the fine residue left after coal is burned at power plants, and it is stored in large volume. If it is not contained it can blow as dust or leach into soil and water, which is a real risk to the site, the neighbours and the operating permit. A sealed, lined spiral silo keeps the ash in, dry and stable, so the plant meets its environmental duty without a concrete bunker.
Liner plus moving joint, not a fixed wall
The impermeable liner takes the dust; the Lipp joint absorbs the swell and shrink as stock level and temperature move. A rigid wall would crack at the same points, so the spiral build is the safer closed store for hazardous fine ash.
