| High Light | Audio Speaker ODM Manufacturing Service ,Acoustic Structure PCBA Co-Design Engineering ,DSP Tuning Assembly Turnkey Production | ||
Building a great-sounding speaker is not just about selecting a good driver. It is about the interaction between the driver, the enclosure volume, the port tuning, the amplifier power curve, and the DSP filtering—five variables that are almost never optimized together because the acoustics engineer works for the enclosure factory and the electronics engineer works for the PCBA factory, and they meet for the first time at the prototype integration stage. By that point, the enclosure tooling is already cut, the PCB is already laid out, and the driver is already selected. Any acoustic issue discovered at integration—a 200Hz cabinet resonance, an amplifier that clips 3dB before the driver's rated power, a DSP EQ that was tuned on a different enclosure—can only be patched, not solved. Our audio speaker ODM service eliminates this structural problem by co-designing the acoustic enclosure and the electronics on the same team, from the same CAD environment, with the same target BOM cost. The result is a speaker that sounds 20-40% better at the same cost—or costs 15-25% less at the same sound quality.
| Design Decision | Sequential Approach (Enclosure First, Electronics Later) | Co-Design Approach (Simultaneous) |
|---|---|---|
| Driver Selection | Acoustics engineer selects a driver based on target frequency response and enclosure volume. Selection is locked before the amplifier is chosen. The driver's impedance curve and sensitivity are not cross-checked against amplifier output capability. | Driver sensitivity, impedance curve, power handling, and distortion profile are evaluated against candidate amplifier chips simultaneously. A driver with 3dB lower sensitivity but flatter impedance curve may allow a cheaper amplifier with no output inductor. The system-level tradeoff—not the isolated component spec—drives the decision. |
| Enclosure Volume vs. Amplifier Power | ID design determines external dimensions. Acoustics engineer calculates internal volume and port tuning. Amplifier power is selected last—typically oversized because "we don't want to be underpowered." This adds unnecessary BOM cost in the amplifier chip, power supply, and heat management. | SPL target is set first. Then enclosure volume, driver efficiency, and amplifier power are traded off together. A 15% larger internal volume (achievable through PCB miniaturization or battery reconfiguration) may deliver +3dB output—equivalent to doubling amplifier power at zero additional electronics cost. Or a more efficient driver at $0.40 premium eliminates the need for a $1.20 amplifier upgrade. Every dB of SPL is sourced from the cheapest available path. |
| Port Design vs. DSP Filtering | Bass reflex port is designed for a target tuning frequency. Port length and diameter are fixed in the mold. Any deviation in actual tuning frequency due to manufacturing tolerances is left uncorrected, resulting in a 3-5dB bass response variation from unit to unit. | Port is designed with a target tuning frequency that deliberately places the -3dB point 5-10Hz above the final desired bass extension. Then DSP bass enhancement fills in the sub-port-frequency range with psychoacoustic bass processing. This two-layer approach produces deeper perceived bass than a standalone port design, with less unit-to-unit variation—because DSP parameters are calibrated per production batch, while port dimensions are fixed. |
| PCB Layout vs. Acoustic Cavity | PCB is designed to fit inside the enclosure. Capacitor and inductor heights are not checked against the internal air volume distribution. Tall components create acoustic obstructions—reflections, diffraction, and standing waves—that color the sound in ways no DSP can fully correct. | PCB component placement is co-reviewed with the acoustic simulation. Tall components (electrolytic capacitors, inductors, heatsinks) are positioned in acoustically non-critical zones. Internal air volume distribution is simulated with PCB assembly in place, not with an empty enclosure. Component height caps are specified where drivers or ports require unobstructed airflow. |
| Optimization | Mechanism | Sound Quality Impact | BOM Saving |
|---|---|---|---|
| Amplifier Power vs. Driver Sensitivity Tradeoff | Specify +3dB more sensitive driver (+$0.35 premium). Allows 5W amplifier instead of 10W amplifier (-$0.80 savings on chip + power stage). Net saving: $0.45. Same SPL output. | Lower amplifier power means less heat, longer battery life, and lower distortion at typical listening levels (because amplifier operates further from clipping region). | $0.45-0.80/unit |
| Enclosure Material vs. Mechanical Damping | Thinner ABS enclosure (1.8mm vs. 2.5mm) with internal bracing ribs and constrained-layer damping pads at resonance nodes. Saves 25% on enclosure material cost. Acoustic performance maintained through structural simulation and damping, not material thickness. | Thinner enclosure with well-placed damping actually reduces cabinet coloration because the constrained-layer damping absorbs panel resonance energy that thicker plastic merely shifts to a different frequency. | $0.30-0.60/unit |
| Passive Radiator vs. Port Tube | Passive radiator (PR) eliminates the port tube and its associated mold complexity (internal core pull, wall thickness consistency, flare radius). PR adds $0.50 but removes $0.20 in mold amortization and $0.15 in assembly labor (no port tube gluing). Net cost: +$0.15. But PR provides better bass at smaller enclosure volumes—enabling a 10% smaller enclosure that saves $0.40 in plastic. | Passive radiator produces tighter, more controlled bass than a port tube at small enclosure volumes. No port chuffing noise at high output levels. Better transient response because PR is a damped resonator, not a Helmholtz resonance. | $0.25-0.40/unit (enclosure size reduction) |
| DSP EQ vs. Passive Crossover | In multi-driver systems (tweeter + woofer), a passive crossover requires inductors, capacitors, and resistors costing $0.40-1.20. Active DSP crossover with separate amplifier channels costs an additional amplifier chip ($0.60-1.00). But the DSP solution allows per-driver EQ and time alignment—and eliminates passive component tolerance variation, which is the #1 cause of unit-to-unit sound quality variation. | Active DSP crossover provides steeper crossover slopes (24-48dB/octave vs. 6-12dB/octave passive), better driver protection, and consistent performance unit-to-unit. Perceived sound quality improvement is typically 15-30% in blind listening tests. | $0 to +$0.40 (sometimes neutral or slightly positive after passive component elimination) |

Most ODM factories that produce Bluetooth speakers are not audio companies—they are manufacturing companies that happen to assemble speakers. Their acoustic engineering consists of buying an off-the-shelf amplifier module, putting it in a generic rectangular plastic box with a port tube, and tweaking a graphic EQ by ear. The result is a speaker that makes sound, not a speaker that sounds good. Our audio ODM team includes acoustic engineers with experience in consumer and professional audio product development. They understand Thiele-Small parameters, boundary element method simulation, psychoacoustic bass enhancement, and the interaction between DSP filtering and perceptual loudness. They also understand cost—every acoustic decision is evaluated against its BOM impact. The result is a speaker that sounds like it was designed by an audio company, manufactured with cost discipline, and delivered with the reliability of an experienced ODM partner.
Send us your speaker concept: target retail price, use case, desired audio character, and annual volume forecast. We will return an acoustic platform recommendation with preliminary BOM cost and co-design optimization opportunities within 7 working days.
