Duplex Stainless Steel (DSS) refers to stainless steel in which ferrite and austenite each account for about 50%. Generally, the content of the smaller phase needs to be at least 30%. In the case of low C content, the Cr content is 18%~28% and the Ni content is 3%~10%. Some steels also contain alloying elements such as Mo, Cu, Nb, Ti, and N.

This type of steel has the characteristics of both austenitic and ferritic stainless steel. Compared with ferrite, it has higher plasticity and toughness, no room temperature brittleness, significantly improved intergranular corrosion resistance and welding performance, while maintaining iron content. The solid stainless steel is brittle at 475°C, has high thermal conductivity, and has superplasticity and other characteristics. Compared with austenitic stainless steel, it has high strength and significantly improved resistance to intergranular corrosion and chloride stress corrosion. Duplex stainless steel has excellent pitting corrosion resistance and is also a nickel-saving stainless steel.

It has the following salient features:

• Duplex Structure: Duplex stainless steels get their name from their microstructure, which consists of approximately equal parts of the ferrite and austenite phases. This structure gives the material a unique combination of properties.
• High strength: Compared with traditional austenitic stainless steel, duplex stainless steel has higher yield strength and tensile strength. This makes them very popular in applications requiring higher mechanical properties.
• Good corrosion resistance: Duplex stainless steel has excellent corrosion resistance, especially in resisting pitting corrosion, crevice corrosion and stress corrosion cracking. This makes them suitable for use in highly corrosive environments such as marine environments and the chemical industry.
• Resistant to Chloride Corrosion: Duplex stainless steels are particularly suitable for chloride-containing environments because chloride is a major corrosion factor in many traditional stainless steels.
• Good welding properties: Duplex stainless steels generally have good welding properties, which makes them easier to work with during construction and manufacturing.
• Lower coefficient of thermal expansion: Compared to austenitic stainless steels, duplex stainless steels have a lower coefficient of thermal expansion, which makes them more dimensionally stable under temperature changes.
• Higher creep resistance: In some high-temperature applications, duplex stainless steels have better creep resistance than austenitic stainless steels.
