Define the sphere and thread as one part

Where the drawing specifies a blind hole, identify usable thread depth separately from the total drilled depth. For a through-hole design, identify the complete opening and any end treatment.

The remaining material around the hole and the position of the thread are part of the component design. These relationships should be reviewed for the actual sphere diameter rather than copied unchanged between the 10mm, 12mm and 20mm options. A clear drawing avoids assumptions about interchangeable hole arrangements.

316L material for the intended exposure

316L is a low-carbon, molybdenum-alloyed austenitic stainless steel. Material selection should still consider the actual process medium, temperature and cleaning conditions. The grade designation provides a material basis, not a universal corrosion or hygiene approval for every assembled component.

Where the enquiry relates to food-handling equipment, identify the contact conditions and any applicable documentation or surface requirements. Acceptance belongs to the complete specification and intended use. Do not assume that material name alone establishes approval of the finished equipment.

Finish the connection and exposed surface

The surface finish of the sphere and the quality of the threaded hole serve different functions. Specify the required external appearance or roughness and the acceptance of thread entry, edges and burrs. A polished-looking sphere can still require additional dimensional and thread inspection.

If the assembly relies on a mating shoulder, seating surface or particular orientation, show it on the drawing. Review access for assembly and the method used to secure the connection. The required engagement and tightening practice should be defined by the component or equipment design.

Inspection for the three size options

Useful checks include outside diameter, hole position, thread fit and the agreed finished-surface condition. State whether the order needs a particular ball grade or individual dimensional limits. A universal tolerance copied from a general ball catalogue may not address the features that matter to this threaded component.

Keep the three sizes separately identified during receipt and storage. The packaging label should connect the sphere size, thread designation and material to the order line. This is especially useful when several assemblies use similar-looking spheres with different internal threads.

Prepare a repeatable component order

Provide the drawing revision, nominal size, thread details and required quantity. Include any material records or inspection documentation needed for acceptance. For replacement parts, describe the mating component so that the thread and seating requirements can be reviewed together.
