1. Product Overview
Nomay Silicone Glass Cloth Tape is a single-sided masking tape combining a silicone rubber protective layer, woven fiberglass reinforcement and silicone pressure-sensitive adhesive.
Common purchasing names include silicone rubber coated fiberglass tape, thermal spray masking tape and plasma spray masking tape. Dedicated constructions may also be evaluated for HVOF masking.
The reinforced rubber construction protects selected non-spray areas from abrasive particles and coating overspray under a validated process. It is distinct from ordinary glass cloth tape coated directly with adhesive.
2. Product Construction
Protective layer: Silicone rubber.
Reinforcement: Woven fiberglass cloth.
Adhesive: Silicone pressure-sensitive adhesive.
Adhesive side: Single-sided.
Release format: Liner-backed or self-wound where the selected construction permits.
Converted formats: Slit rolls, strips and custom die-cut masks.
The silicone rubber layer is a protective component, while the silicone adhesive bonds the tape to the part. Their thicknesses and functions must be specified separately.
Glass cloth reinforcement may be embedded within the rubber composite. Composite backing thickness must not be described as pure silicone rubber thickness.
3. Reference Specifications and Customization
A comparable single-ply silicone rubber and glass cloth masking construction has approximately 0.31 mm finished thickness and a 33 m roll length. These are public-product selection references, not confirmed specifications for every Nomay model.
Request the required total thickness, width, roll length and liner. Thicker or multilayer versions require separate construction confirmation.
Finished thickness includes the permanent composite backing and adhesive, excluding the removable release liner.
Peel adhesion must be defined using the substrate, specimen width, peel angle, speed, dwell time and conditioning. Do not apply ordinary glass cloth tape adhesion or dimensional ranges to this composite product.

Conformability
The flexible composite can follow suitable curves and component profiles. Thickness and layer count affect the minimum practical bend radius.
Defined Masking Boundaries
Correctly installed masks protect designated areas while controlling the transition to the coated surface.
Custom Conversion
Slit rolls and die-cut parts support repeated geometry, positioning and removal access.
5. Thermal-Spray Process Selection
Specify the spray process, feedstock, particle exposure and required protection rather than selecting by temperature alone.
Plasma spraying, HVOF, flame spraying and metallization create different combinations of heat, particle velocity and erosion.
HVOF or other severe exposure may require a reinforced, multilayer or separately qualified construction. A standard plasma-masking grade must not automatically be assigned to every HVOF process.
Define spray distance, angle, traverse speed, dwell, number of passes and cooling intervals. Include any preceding grit-blast step in the evaluation.
6. Temperature and Exposure
A comparable silicone rubber and glass cloth masking grade lists a maximum operating temperature of 260°C. This is a reference for preliminary selection, not a Nomay continuous-service rating or a guarantee of thermal-spray survival.
Confirm the selected model's component-contact temperature, exposure duration and process conditions.
Spray plume temperature is not the same as tape temperature. Local particle impact and heat flux can damage a mask even when a general temperature rating appears suitable.
Long-duration exposure, direct flame contact and repeated use require separate validation.
7. Application Industries and Scenarios
Thermal-Spray Coating Services
Mask selected non-coating areas during compatible plasma or flame-spray operations.
Grit Blasting
Protect suitable surfaces during the approved blasting step. Confirm abrasive type, size, pressure, angle, distance and exposure time.
Turbine and Engine Components
Drawing-based masks may protect designated areas during coating or repair. Component-specific approval is required where the process specification demands it.
Industrial Surface Engineering
Selected constructions may protect bearing faces, shafts, edges and assembly interfaces during repair coating.
HVOF Applications
Request a dedicated construction review for the actual process. Confirm erosion resistance, edge protection and required layering before production.
8. Mask Design and Layer Count
Select thickness and layer count together with geometry and spray direction.
More thickness may improve protection in some applications but can reduce conformity, increase edge height or alter the spray shadow. It does not guarantee better results in every process.
Position seams and overlaps according to the validated masking procedure. Avoid gaps, lifted edges and unsupported spans.
Flat tape or die-cut discs can cover suitable openings but are not substitutes for molded plugs in deep bores.
Foil-reinforced or additional cloth-layer versions are separate constructions and require their own specification.
9. Application Procedure
Clean and dry the substrate using the approved process. Remove oils, dust and preparation residues.
Apply the tape without excessive stretching. Press firmly around edges and shaped features.
Use the validated number of layers and overlap arrangement. Confirm that the mask remains seated on the actual component geometry.
Run a representative process trial and inspect erosion, burn-through, lifting, coating penetration and substrate condition.
Remove after the agreed cooling interval using the validated method. Check for adhesive residue, backing fragments and unwanted coating.
10. Adhesion, Removal and Contamination
Initial tack helps placement but does not establish retention throughout a spray cycle.
Evaluate adhesive holding and removal after the complete blasting and coating sequence. Strong adhesion before exposure does not guarantee acceptable post-process removal.
Where downstream bonding, painting or surface analysis is sensitive to silicone transfer, define the contamination limit before selection.
Low-residue or low-fray versions may be requested, subject to specification and model confirmation. Clean removal must be assessed on the actual surface.
11. Comparison, Handling and Storage
Ordinary Glass Cloth Tape
This generally has cloth coated directly with adhesive. It does not provide the same rubber protective layer as this product.
Silicone-Rubber-Coated Glass Cloth
Select for the required balance of conformity, abrasion resistance and thermal-spray protection.
Foil-Reinforced and Multilayer Masks
Consider separately qualified constructions where the process requires additional protection. Do not transfer their performance to a single-ply version.
Store unused rolls in original packaging under the confirmed storage conditions. Protect the adhesive and rubber surface from contamination, and follow the selected model's shelf life.
