A modular drilling rig is a land-based drilling system designed with a modular, highly integrated structure that enables fast rig-up, rig-down, and relocation. Unlike conventional drilling rigs that require extensive on-site assembly and disassembly, modular rigs are divided into several independent transportable modules connected by pin shafts, featuring good interchangeability and fast rigging-up and down-. This design approach significantly reduces non-productive time (NPT) between wells and lowers overall operating costs-.
Our modular drilling rigs are available in three drive configurations—electric drive (DC/AC/VF), compound drive, or mechanical drive—to suit different operational requirements and power availability. They are typically equipped with a K-type mast and box-type or swing-up substructure, with a top drive system available upon request. The rigs are designed for drilling depths ranging from 1,500 m to 9,000 m and are manufactured under API 4F, 7K, 8C, 6A, and 16C specifications. Our manufacturing process can be supervised by customers and certified by any third-party inspection body.
The modular drilling rig operates on the same fundamental principles as any conventional rotary drilling rig: a drawworks hoists and lowers the drill string through a mast and travelling block system, while a rotary table or top drive provides rotational power to the bit, and mud pumps circulate drilling fluid to cool the bit and carry cuttings to the surface.
The key difference lies in the rig's physical configuration. Instead of a single massive structure that must be assembled piece by piece on location, the modular rig is divided into several transportable modules:
Mast modules – Typically a K-type mast that can be two-stage telescoping, raised as a whole by hydraulic cylinders
Substructure modules – Parallelogram, piled-box-type, or telescoping substructure; all floor devices and mast can be installed in a low position and wholly lifted by the drawworks
Drawworks module – Mounted on a dedicated skid, transported independently
Power module – Diesel engines, electric motors, or combined power packs
Mud pump module – One or more triplex pumps with associated piping
Control cabin module – Self-contained driller control house with unified layout of air, electric, and hydraulic controls
Each module is connected by pin shafts, allowing rapid assembly and disassembly without the need for heavy cranes or extensive rig-up crews. A hammer and a special pin-pulling tool are sufficient for rig-down operations.
Our modular drilling rigs are available with three drive options:
Electric Drive (DC/AC/VF) – AC-SCR-DC electric drive technology for DC rigs; full digital AC VF technology with integrated PLC logic control for electric, air, and hydraulic systems for AC rigs
Compound Drive – Combination of diesel engine and hydraulic coupler (torque converter) with integral chain compound box
Mechanical Drive – Powered by diesel engines, electric motors, or combined power packs
DC drawworks – Integral chain driving mode, mechanical gear-shifting device, hydraulic disc main brake, eddy current auxiliary brake (or air-controlled disc brake), and independent auto driller
AC drawworks – Single drum gear driving with stepless speed regulation; hydraulic disc brake as main brake, motor dynamic brake as auxiliary brake
Fewer modules, connected by pin shafts for fast rigging-up and down
Modules can be transported independently through conventional oilfield moving trucks
No crane required for rig-down—a hammer and special pin-pulling tool are sufficient
Standard interfaces make installation and movement of rig modules easy and convenient
Self-contained driller control house with unified layout of air, electric, and hydraulic controls
Full drilling process monitoring and protection via PLC logic control
Data storage, printing, and remote transmission capabilities
Intelligent control over travelling block to avoid collision and bumping
Drawworks, rotary table, and mud pump are independently powered by motors
Full process stepless speed regulation
Parallelogram substructure (lifted as a whole), piled-box-type, or telescoping substructure
All floor devices and mast can be installed in a low position and wholly lifted by the drawworks
An integral guiding rail can be fitted for cluster well drilling operations
