| High Light | Truck Mounted Hydration Unit ,Fracturing Fluid Hydration Unit | ||
A hydration unit is a specialized piece of equipment used in hydraulic fracturing operations to prepare fracturing fluids by mixing water with polymers, gelling agents, and other chemicals. It is an essential component of any modern frac spread, working alongside blenders, fracturing pumps, chemical additive units, and data vans to ensure a continuous, reliable supply of properly hydrated fracturing fluid.
In simple terms, the hydration unit performs a critical function: it gives fracturing gels the time and energy they need to reach their target viscosity before being sent to the blender for proppant addition and then to the high-pressure pumps for injection downhole. Without proper hydration, fracturing fluids would not carry proppants effectively, reducing the effectiveness of the entire stimulation treatment.
Our hydration units are available in truck-mounted, trailer-mounted, or skid-mounted configurations, with models ranging from 75 BPM to 100 BPM discharge flowrates. They are engineered to deliver consistent, high-quality fluid preparation for large-scale fracturing operations in both conventional and unconventional reservoirs.
The hydration process is the foundation of any fracturing fluid system. Polymer-based gelling agents—whether dry powders or liquid concentrates—must be thoroughly mixed with water and allowed to hydrate (absorb water and swell) to reach their designed viscosity. This viscosity is what enables the fluid to carry proppant (sand or ceramic particles) into the fractures and keep them propped open after the pressure is released.
Without a dedicated hydration unit, operators would need to rely on batch mixing or pre-gel operations—processes that are time-consuming, wasteful, and prone to inconsistency. Pre-gelling often results in unused gelled fluid that must be disposed of, representing a significant cost and environmental burden.
A continuous hydration unit solves these problems by:
Eliminating pre-gel operations – Fluid is prepared on demand, reducing waste and disposal costs-
Ensuring consistent fluid quality – Automated mixing and precise chemical addition deliver repeatable results
Enabling large-scale operations – High-capacity systems support the high flowrates required for multi-well pad fracturing
Reducing labour intensity – One-button intelligent control modes minimise manual intervention
The hydration unit draws water from a source (such as a water tank or nearby pond) through its suction manifold using centrifugal pumps. This water is then mixed with dry polymer powder or liquid gel concentrate in a hydration tank equipped with multiple agitators. The agitators keep the fluid in motion, ensuring thorough mixing and preventing the gel from settling or "channeling"-.
For Dry-on-the-Fly (DOTF) systems—the most common configuration in modern fracturing—dry polymer powder is metered from a powder tank into the mixing system using augers. The powder is then combined with water in a high-energy mixing zone before entering the hydration tank.
For liquid concentrate systems, liquid gel concentrate is pumped directly into the water stream using positive displacement pumps, eliminating the need for dry powder handling.
Once the fluid has reached the target viscosity (typically after a residence time of around three minutes), it is discharged to the blender unit, where proppant is added before being sent to the fracturing pumps.
Our hydration units feature self-developed mixers and mixing systems that efficiently combine gel powder with water, or concentrated solution with water, delivering high-quality fracturing fluid at large flowrates.
An automated control system reduces labour intensity and minimises the risk of human error. Operators can manage the entire hydration process—from powder feeding to fluid discharge—with minimal manual input.
High-quality executive parts, electric components, and hydraulic components ensure long-duration, high-power operation. The system is designed for the demanding conditions of continuous, large-scale fracturing.
The dry powder tank—with a capacity of 6,600 lb (2,994 kg)—reduces the frequency of powder feeding during large-scale operations, ensuring uninterrupted fluid preparation.
A liftable control cabin provides operators with a clear view of the tank level, improving situational awareness and operational safety. Air conditioning and lighting are included to enhance operator comfort.
The system can accommodate up to four chemical additive pumps (or two or more positive displacement pumps for liquid concentrate models), allowing precise metering of various additives.
Video monitoring, thermometers, pH meters, and viscometers (optional) provide real-time visibility into fluid quality and system performance.
Available on truck, trailer, or skid carriers, our hydration units can be configured to match your specific operational requirements and transport constraints.
