The integral BOP stack is a unified well control assembly that integrates a ram blowout preventer, an annular blowout preventer, and a drilling spool into a single, forged unit. Unlike conventional BOP stacks that require multiple individual components to be bolted together on location, the integral design eliminates all inter-component connections, resulting in a safe, fast, and highly efficient blowout preventer system.
This integrated approach is particularly valuable for mechanical drilling rigs and workover rigs with limited installation space. By combining three critical well control devices into one compact assembly, the integral BOP stack reduces the overall height and footprint of the well control system, making it an ideal solution for rigs where space is at a premium. The complete package is widely used across most oilfields worldwide.
The integral BOP stack combines three essential well control components into a single unit:
Located at the top of the stack, the annular BOP uses a spherical or tapered rubber packing element to seal the annular space between the drill pipe and the wellbore. It can seal around various tools and pipe sizes—including kellys, drill pipe, drill collars, casing, coring tools, cables, and wire rope. When used in conjunction with a pressure-regulating valve and accumulator, the annular BOP enables snubbing service—the ability to run pipe in or out of the well under pressure.
Positioned below the annular BOP, the ram BOP contains one or more sets of rams that can be closed to seal the wellbore. Depending on the configuration, the ram BOP may include:
Pipe rams – Seal around the drill pipe
Blind rams – Seal the wellbore when no pipe is present
Shear rams – Cut through the drill pipe in emergencies
Variable diameter rams – Seal around different pipe sizes
The drilling spool provides side outlets for connection to choke and kill manifolds, enabling essential well control operations after the well has been sealed.
The entire BOP stack operates in conjunction with a hydraulic control system. When hydraulic pressure is applied, the annular BOP and ram BOPs can be closed rapidly to seal the well in response to a kick or blowout.
The integral BOP stack is forged as a single whole piece during production, eliminating all combined connections between components. This design feature offers several critical safety advantages:
Fewer leakage points – With no inter-component connections, the number of potential leak paths is dramatically reduced.
Elimination of flange connections – The most common source of BOP stack leaks is eliminated entirely.

Unlike conventional stacks that require individual installation and connection of each component—a time-consuming process involving multiple flange connections, bolt torquing, and pressure testing—the integral stack arrives as a complete, pre-assembled, and pre-tested unit. This simplified installation procedure saves valuable rig time and accelerates drilling operations.

High-grade ram rubber cores and side flange sealing systems are designed to meet extreme operating conditions, including high-temperature, low-temperature, and acidic (H₂S) environments. The housing is manufactured from low-alloy steel forgings or castings, with chemical composition, mechanical properties, and forming processes conforming to applicable standards.
All flange sizes, bolts, clamps, and ring grooves conform to API 16A and GOST standards. This dual compliance ensures compatibility with both international and regional wellhead equipment standards.

Connection types available: The BOP stack is offered with studded, flanged, and hubbed top and bottom connections-. Top and bottom flange connections comply with API 6B and API 6BX standards with various thread configurations.
When drill pipe, tubing, or casing is present in the wellbore, the pipe rams or variable diameter rams can be closed to seal the annular space between the pipe and the casing or wellbore. The annular BOP can also seal around the pipe, providing an additional layer of well control.
When the wellbore is empty, the blind rams can be closed to completely seal the wellhead. This is typically done when the drill string has been pulled out for tripping or when the well is shut in for extended periods.
In critical situations where the drill pipe cannot be retrieved, the shear rams can be activated to cut through the drill pipe and seal the wellbore. This is a last-resort measure to prevent a blowout.
After the well has been sealed, essential well control operations can be performed through the choke and kill manifold connected to the drilling spool and side outlets:
Mud circulation – Circulating drilling fluid to condition the mud and remove contaminants
Choking – Controlling wellbore pressure during kick circulation
Killing – Pumping heavy fluid to kill the well
Well washing – Cleaning the wellbore
When used together with the choke and kill manifold, the integral BOP stack can control well pressure effectively and achieve near-balance well killing operations. This approach minimizes formation damage while maintaining safe well control.
