The flotation mechanism of SIPX relies on the chemisorption of the xanthate ion (C³H&sup7;OCS²&supmin;) onto sulfide mineral surfaces, where the polar dithiocarbonate head group forms strong bonds with metal cation sites on galena, chalcopyrite, sphalerite (after copper activation), pyrite, and gold-bearing sulfides. The non-polar isopropyl hydrocarbon chain extends outward from the mineral surface, rendering it hydrophobic and enabling stable bubble attachment in the flotation pulp. SIPX exhibits moderately strong collecting power with good selectivity against iron sulfides at controlled pH (8.5-11.0), making it the reagent of choice for rougher and scavenger flotation stages across a broad range of sulfide ore types. In gold processing, SIPX is the standard collector for gold-bearing pyrite and arsenopyrite ores, typically dosed at 50-150 g/t in rougher flotation circuits operating at pH 8.5-10.5 with copper sulfate as an activator when processing low-pyrite ores. For copper and copper-gold porphyry operations throughout the Andean region, SIPX serves as the main sulfide collector at dosages of 30-80 g/t, often in combination with dithiophosphate co-collectors for enhanced precious metal recovery. In lead-zinc sequential flotation circuits, SIPX is the preferred galena collector in the lead flotation stage at pH 8.5-10.0, typically at 50-100 g/t dosage with sodium cyanide or zinc sulfate as sphalerite depressants. Following lead flotation, copper sulfate-activated sphalerite is recovered with SIPX at 60-120 g/t in the zinc circuit.
