Outdoor LED displays are bright, large, and operate for long hours – power consumption has always been a key concern for customers.
The core of common‑cathode energy‑saving technology is not to reduce brightness, but to minimise wasted electrical energy by delivering power more precisely, based on the actual voltage requirements of red, green, and blue LEDs.
Each pixel on an LED display typically consists of red, green, and blue LEDs. These three colours require different operating voltages:
Red LEDs require a relatively low operating voltage.
Green and blue LEDs require higher voltages.
Traditional common‑anode power supply applies a unified voltage to all LEDs. When the supplied voltage exceeds the actual requirement of a given LED, the excess voltage is not converted into brightness – it is dissipated as heat. That excess energy represents additional, unnecessary power consumption.
Common‑cathode technology uses a colour‑specific voltage supply, providing each LED colour with a voltage closer to its actual requirement. Typical values are:

Compared to unified voltage supply, colour‑specific power delivery reduces excess voltage loss and also lowers heat generation in the driver circuits.
In simple terms: Traditional common‑anode uses a one‑size‑fits‑all voltage; common‑cathode supplies power on demand.
According to the electrical power formula:
Power = Voltage × Current
Under the premise of meeting brightness and driving current requirements, reducing unnecessary supply voltage directly cuts excess power consumption.
Therefore, common‑cathode energy saving does not sacrifice brightness – it improves power utilisation efficiency.
Under the same screen area, same brightness, and same playback conditions, common‑cathode power supply effectively reduces display power consumption. Depending on product configuration and testing conditions, overall energy savings typically range from 20% to 40%.
The principle is straightforward: different‑coloured LEDs use different supply voltages, bringing voltage closer to actual needs and reducing energy waste converted into heat.
What it saves is not display performance – it’s the electricity that traditional power supply methods simply waste.
