2. Compostability – The Core Optimistic Feature:
Turning Waste into Resource: Under the right conditions in industrial composting facilities (with specific heat, moisture, and microbes), PLA can break down into water, CO₂, and organic matter (compost) within a few months. This process diverts waste from landfills and incinerators and creates a valuable soil amendment.
Closing the Loop: A PLA-coated cup used for compostable waste can, in theory, be composted along with its contents (e.g., food scraps), creating a clean and efficient waste stream.
