An excavator swing bearing (also called a slewing ring, turntable bearing, or rotary bearing) is a critical component that allows the upper structure (house) of an excavator to rotate 360 degrees smoothly while supporting heavy loads.
Location: Installed between the excavator’s upper frame (where the cab, engine, and boom are mounted) and the undercarriage (tracks or wheels).
Function: Enables full rotation while distributing weight and handling forces from digging, lifting, and swinging.
Without a properly functioning swing bearing, an excavator cannot:
✔ Rotate smoothly
✔ Lift heavy loads safely
✔ Maintain stability during operation
The swing bearing consists of two main rings:
Inner Ring: Attached to the undercarriage (fixed).
Outer Ring: Connected to the upper structure (rotates).
Between these rings are rolling elements (balls or rollers) that reduce friction. A gear ring (internal or external) connects to the swing motor, enabling rotation.
