Blood pressure (BP) is the pressure that circulating blood puts on the walls of arteries. During each heartbeat, blood pressure varies between a maximum (systolic) and a minimum (diastolic). This change indicates the state of the heart's pumping function, which is an important vital sign. A non-invasive indirect method of measuring blood pressure is oscillometric blood pressure measurement. This method uses an inflated blood pressure cuff that is placed over the patient's arm or thigh. Blood pressure is measured by partially blocking the artery with a cuff. So-called Korotkoff sounds are produced by the expansion of the arterial wall with each heartbeat. Systolic and diastolic blood pressure were determined by device algorithm interpretation based on mean arterial pressure and magnitude of Korotkoff sound change. For correct non-invasive measurements, it is important to use the correct cuff size, as too small a cuff can result in false high pressure readings and too large a cuff can result in false low pressure readings.
