Citrus juice processors face slim margins and high waste disposal costs. The peel contains microscopic oil sacs rich in d-limonene and aromatic aldehydes. Traditionally, this peel is sold as low-value cattle feed or incurs landfill fees. Extracting this oil requires specific mechanical action—simple steam distillation damages the fresh, zesty top notes. Furthermore, the oil oxidizes rapidly if exposed to air during processing. The industry needs a continuous, sanitary, and inert method to capture this oil at the juice extraction point.
This system provides a turnkey solution for juice byproduct valorization. Whole fruit or peeled rind is fed through a rasping drum that gently abrades the surface, rupturing the oil sacs. A controlled water spray creates an oil-in-water emulsion, which is pumped to a high-speed disc-stack centrifuge.
