The 5mm Grey Polycarbonate Solid Sheet is a premium-grade, monolithic (solid) panel that combines exceptional strength with a sleek, modern aesthetic. 1. Core Specifications & Composition
Material: 100% Virgin Polycarbonate Resin, with a uniform grey tint throughout the sheet (not a surface coating).
Thickness: 5mm (approximately 3/16"). This provides an ideal balance of rigidity for flat or lightly curved applications and ease of handling/fabrication.
Surface: Typically supplied with a hard-coat on one or both sides. This permanent, co-extruded layer provides superior resistance to scratches, chemicals, and UV degradation.
Finish: Grey Tint. Available in a range of shades from light smoke to dark graphite. The tint reduces glare and heat transmission while maintaining a degree of light diffusion. It is not completely opaque, offering privacy with soft, shadowy light transmission.
2. Key Properties & Advantages
Unmatched Impact Resistance: Up to 250 times stronger than glass of the same thickness. It is virtually unbreakable, making it a premier safety and security glazing material. It meets high-impact safety standards.
Lightweight: Approximately half the weight of glass, it dramatically reduces structural support requirements and makes handling and installation significantly easier and safer.
UV Protection: High-quality sheets feature a co-extruded UV-inhibitor layer, which blocks over 99.9% of harmful UV rays. This protects the sheet itself from yellowing and brittleness over time and shields interior spaces.
Thermal & Dimensional Stability: Performs reliably across a wide temperature range (from -40°C to +120°C) with a low thermal expansion coefficient, reducing stress on frames.
Inherent Flame Retardancy: Polycarbonate is naturally a B1 / Class A fire-rated material, with low flame spread and no production of toxic fumes.
Aesthetic & Functional Grey Tint:
Solar Control & Glare Reduction: The tint absorbs a portion of solar radiation, reducing heat gain (Solar Heat Gain Coefficient) and cutting down on harsh glare.
Visual Privacy: Creates a semi-private, sophisticated appearance, ideal for partitions or façades where complete transparency is not desired.
Uniform Appearance: Hides minor scratches and fingerprints better than crystal-clear sheets.
Transportation: Window replacements for buses, RVs, or agricultural equipment requiring shatterproof performance.
Privacy Screens: For residential patios, terraces, or fencing.
4. Handling & Fabrication Notes
Easy to Work With: Can be cut cleanly with standard woodworking tools (saw, router). For best edges, use carbide-tipped blades.
Bending: Can be cold-bent (using the minimum bending radius specified by the manufacturer, typically 150-200x the sheet thickness) or thermoformed for more complex curves.
Installation: Must be mounted using proper polycarbonate-compatible sealants (silicone, EPDM, or neoprene gaskets) and with adequate space for thermal expansion. Pre-drill holes for fasteners.
