Flexible polyurethane foam (FPF) affects our lives in many ways and new applications are rolling out on a regular basis. It is used as cushioning for a wide variety of consumer and commercial products including furniture, carpet cushion, transportation, bedding, packaging, textiles and fibers. FPF usage consists mostly of slabstock, which is used primarily for carpet cushion and furniture. Most of the remainder is used by the transportation industry for automotive interiors and other purposes.
The density and hardness are the most important of the physical properties, giving the customer the information required to decide which grade to use for which application. Those used in mattresses are generally softer than those used in seating applications as the weight of a person is more evenly spread out. Seating grades must be much firmer as they need to provide support for the body over a much smaller area.
The density gives a total weight per unit volume for the foam, the greater the density, the higher the quality of the foam and the longer it is likely to last in the home or workplace.
The hardness indicates how firm the foam is and gives a feel for how comfortable this will be in use.
